Otto by Otto

2024 - DOCUMENTARY FILM | DIRECTORS assistant and CAMERA OPERATOR

Logline:

Gracie Otto attempts to capture the memories of her father, iconic Australian actor and artist Barry Otto, before they are lost forever.

Synopsis:

Barry Otto’s career has spanned more than 50 years and close to a hundred theatre credits, encompassing the golden days of 1970s and ’80s Australian theatre and film and cinema classics as Bliss (1985), Strictly Ballroom (1992) and Cosi (1996). Creative, eccentric, and endearing, Barry is a true original. Gracie’s absorbing film is not a traditional biopic, but rather a deeply personal reflection on her relationship with her father shot over five years, in the twilight of his career and as his health deteriorates. Revealed: Otto by Otto both honours this outstanding artist and actor and preserves his memory.

ABOUT THE CONTEST:

"This summer, Soho House and IWC Schaffhausen are helping two members turn their scripts into short films.
Back in February, we announced the inaugural edition of Script House, an incubator for North American members and film professionals looking to strengthen their skills as screenwriters and filmmakers, with help from IWC Schaffhausen.
The Soho House West Hollywood members will receive mentoring sessions from members of the judging panel in order to evolve and improve their scripts, and once finalized, will go into production for completion by August.
Come September, both winners’ films will be shown at For the Love of Cinema, IWC’S Gala Night event at the Toronto International Film festival (TIFF).
The panel of judges included industry thought leaders and experts like Barry Jenkins, Bruce Wagner, Sean Baker, Christine Vachon, Sharon Badal, Alison Chernick, Marcus Hu and Chris Grainger-Herr — some of whom will provide mentoring and feedback to the winning members.
With over 200 submissions, the judges narrowed it down to 10 finalists, with Scott Lochmus and Gracie Otto coming out victorious.
Finally, both winners’ films will be shown across all North American Soho House screening rooms by the end of 2018, in partnership with IWC Schaffhausen."

Robbing the Kong

2018 - SHORT FILM | story By emily hawe

OVERVIEW

Gracie Otto’s “Robbing the Kong” is a bewitching reverie that plays with the dilemma of whether we are pawns in a grand schematic masterpiece or masters of our own universe. Dragon pieces from the age-old Chinese game of Mahjong serve as symbolic portents as the film follows the ethereal Sylvia Hoeks through new starts, sweet success, and, fittingly, surrendering to the unknown. The divide of dreams from reality, the film makes one wonder, in which state of being are we (and Sylvia) truly alive? Or is being alive the sum of our imaginary and physical experience? In the words of the Mahjong master herself, “I can’t tell you what’s real!” - SIDE-NOTE.com

RACHEL WARD episode summary:

British film director, actress, mother, and muse, Rachel Ward is the better half of Bryan Brown. Rachel began as a model on covers for Vogue, Cosmopolitan and more. In 1977 she moved to the United States aged 20 and four years later she was nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in Sharky’s Machine alongside legend, Burt Reynolds. The following year Rachel acted alongside comedy great Steve Martin in Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid. In 1984 Rachel was once again nominated for a Golden Globe for her work in The Thorn Birds. 1985 Ward performed alongside Jeff Bridges in Against All Odds.

Rachel has directed numerous television episodes and recently completed her fourth feature film, Palm Beach. Rachel’s children are also established creatives: Rosie Brown is an interior designer, Matilda an actress and director, and son, Joe, is an illustrator and graphic designer.

Gracie follows Rachel as she glides through her Sydney ‘rabbit warren’ home, which includes stunning Harbour Bridge views. The two discuss directing, dating men whose prime was in the 1970’s, all whilst Rachel attempts to hide discarded joints strewn about the house.
